Depression is classified as a mood disorder. Individuals generally experience a loss of interest and pleasure in daily activities. Depression also causes a persistent feeling of sadness. This mood disorder can cause symptoms relating to low self-esteem, changes in sleep and eating patterns, suicidal thoughts, isolation, irritability and loss of energy. These symptoms may cause significant clinical distress or impairment in social, occupational and or other important areas of functioning. Depression has many degrees of severity and can range from mild, moderate and severe. Mood disorders classified on the depression spectrum include, Major Depression and Dysthymia. Depressive disorders can be treated by a combination of psychotherapy and medication management.
